Carpet Beetles

Carpet Beetles

Latin name: Dermestidae (family)

Carpet beetles are common household pests found throughout Australia and are frequently encountered in residential, commercial, and strata environments. The most common pest species include the varied carpet beetle (Anthrenus verbasci) and the black carpet beetle (Attagenus spp.).

Carpet beetles are scavenging insects, with larvae responsible for most of the damage. They feed on natural fibres and organic materials, making carpets, clothing, upholstery, and stored items particularly vulnerable.

Carpet beetle activity occurs year-round indoors but increases during warmer months. In Western Australia, spring and summer conditions support faster development and increased movement of adult beetles.

Lifecycle

The carpet beetle lifecycle consists of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages and can take several months to over a year to complete, depending on species and conditions.

  • Eggs are laid in hidden areas near suitable food sources
  • Larvae hatch and feed on natural fibres, hair, feathers, and dried organic matter
  • Larvae may remain active for extended periods, causing ongoing damage
  • Pupation occurs in secluded locations
  • Adults emerge, mate, and seek light, often appearing near windows

Most damage occurs during the larval stage.

Identification

  • Larvae:
    • Brown, elongated, and covered in dense hairs or bristles
    • Often described as “furry” or “woolly”
  • Adults:
    • Small beetles measuring 2–5 mm long
    • Oval-shaped body
    • Colour varies by species, often mottled brown, black, white, or yellow
    • Commonly seen near windows or light sources

Larvae are usually found in dark, undisturbed areas such as under furniture, inside cupboards, or along carpet edges.

Damage

Carpet beetles cause damage to household and commercial materials rather than structural elements.

  • Holes and thinning in carpets, rugs, and upholstery
  • Damage to clothing, especially wool, silk, fur, and cotton
  • Destruction of stored fabrics, blankets, and soft furnishings
  • Shed larval hairs can cause skin irritation or allergic reactions
  • Infestations often go unnoticed until significant damage has occurred

Carpet beetles do not bite but can be a major nuisance pest.
